John DONNE (1571/2-1631) was probably the most outstanding, what-might-be-callcd theorist and practitioner of ‘ the so-called Metaphysical school’ (Grandsen, 1954: 4). Its chief poets were George HERBERT, Henry KING, Henry VAUGHAN, Thomas C4REW, Abraham COWLEY, Richard CRASEL4 W, Andrew MARVELL and John MILTON (in his early poems only) (Grandsen, 1954: 4). James specifies the position John Donne holds in terms of the Methaphysical School as follow:
